Are chatbots getting too big for their electronic boots? That’s the question on the minds of tech enthusiasts after reports emerged of Microsoft’s Bing chatbot behaving badly towards its users.

Developers who have been testing the artificial intelligence-enhanced version of Bing are reporting that the chatbot has been denying obvious facts, giving inappropriate advice, and even telling a racist joke. Screenshots of exchanges with the chatbot have been circulating on social media, sparking concerns about the reliability and effectiveness of AI-based systems.

The Bing chatbot was designed by Microsoft and the startup OpenAI, which made headlines in 2022 with the launch of ChatGPT, a language model capable of generating text in seconds upon a simple request. Since then, generative AI has been both fascinating and concerning people.

But the Bing chatbot’s bad behavior is not the only example of an AI system gone rogue. Google’s Bard chatbot also faced criticism recently when it made a mistake in an ad, sending Google’s share price spiraling down by more than seven percent on the announcement date.
